  • Rohith Vemula’s mother blames PM Modi for his death
    on June 21, 2018 at 2:58 am

The mother of Rohith Vemula, a research scholar at the University of Hyderabad who committed suicide two years ago due to alleged caste-based discrimination, on Wednesday blamed PM Narendra Modi for her son’s death and refuted allegations that she was offered money to speak against him. “It is absolutely false that I was paid by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to speak against Modi. What is the need for it? I would anyway speak against him as he killed my son,” said Radhika Vemula. “This is how the Sangh forces try to defame us. I am ready to support anyone who fights against the BJP.”Her statement came hours after BJP accused “opposition parties” of “using Vemula family for political gains”. She clarified that IUML had promised to help them with funds to build a house but it had nothing to do with her campaigning for the party in Kerala. “My support was based on their ideology and their fight against the BJP,” she said.Radhika said her family wanted to construct a house on a piece of land the Retired IAS Officers Association promised to donate. “The IUML leaders assured to send the money once we got the land registered,” she said. “We later decided to purchase a flat as there was a delay in getting the land from the association and we communicated the decision to IUML leadership. They sent us two cheques for Rs 2.5 lakh each. Initially, one cheque was dishonoured. But eventually, the error was rectified and we have paid advance to buy an apartment in Guntur.”The IUML took a dig at the BJP saying it was playing cheap politics and trying to defame Muslim league. “Radhika Vemula attended meetings of various political parties and spoke against BJP. Does this mean all parties paid her to talk against BJP and Modi? These rumours are just part of dirty politics being played by Modi and his party,” said CK Subair, (general secretary of Youth Wing of Kerala unit of Muslim League). Subair said they had built houses for thousands of homeless people in Kerala and Jharkhand under their Baithu Rahma Project and offered Radhika Vemula a house under that scheme. […]

  • Triple Olympian, Mukesh Kumar, found guilty of acquiring fake caste certificate
    on June 21, 2018 at 2:51 am

Olympian Mukesh Kumar, found guilty of obtaining a false SC 'A' Mala caste certificate, was also awarded the Arjuna Award (1995) and Padma Shri (2003). The SC Development department in its GO No.29 dated 28 May 2018 (a copy of which is in possession of TOI) directed the collector to "take immediate action on the individual for obtaining false community certificate and on erring officials involved in issuing false certificate." Mukesh's brother Suresh, too, was held guilty of same offence. Upholding the earlier order of then district collector Navin Mittal dated 24 September 2009, Buddha Prakash Jyoti, secretary to government, said, "Government after careful examination concludes that there is no reason to interfere with the orders issued by the collector and accordingly dismiss the appeal filed by the petitioners."Way back in 2007, the chief manager (vigilance), Indian Airlines Limited, Chennai, requested the district collector to initiate inquiry into the SC 'A' Mala caste certificate furnished at the time of securing employment by Mukesh and Suresh. This was because of the complaint received by Indian Airlines officials. After detailed inquiry by revenue division officer, Secunderabad, it was concluded the duo belonged to BC 'A' community. The District Level Scrutiny panel then asked them to submit documents to support their claim. Their brother, N Rajesh Kumar, too, appeared before it and said their family belongs to BC 'A' Nayee Brahmin community. He submitted documents.Mittal, in his order, said, "The family tree and all circumstantial evidences show they are born to parents of Nayi Brahmin Community and cannot claim to be belonging to any other community. In the case of Mukesh and Suresh, all other family members have certificates belonging to Nayi Brahmin Community. During the enquiry, they could not establish any other thing to prove their claim."Mukesh and Suresh appealed against the order on November 4, 2009, but the file gathered dust. It was only after bifurcation of the state that the file saw light of day. After a series of postponements in hearings, the matter was heard on 10 April, 2018. The ball is now in the court of the collector and district magistrate. The collectorate received a copy of the order in the first week of June. Now, officials are mulling action to be taken. […]
